My mom came up to stay over so that she could be here with Hayden when we went to the hospital. I was pretty anxious and could not sleep. I went downstairs and watched the gymnastics in the Summer Olympics. I had Braxton Hicks contractions all night long, but they were never regular nor did they ever hurt. My water broke at 3:00 am, so I woke Dee and told him we needed to go. I woke my mom to tell her, then I had one contraction that I remember hurting a bit.
I knew something was different, than when my water broke with Hayden, I could tell we needed to hurry, so I went and got in the car. I swear I sat there for 10 minutes waiting for Dee, he was busy primping himself (which he normally doesn't do, so I don't know why he chose this night to care about his appearance). I was feeling the need to leave immediately, so I opened the garage door, I started the car...still waiting for Dee. We pulled out of the garage and I told Dee to HURRY! Then I said let's just go to the Payson hospital, but NO....being a man he said, "we can make it to Provo". Yeah Right!!! He wasn't the one squeezing with all of his might to not let this baby fall out of his body. Ya know those handles in your car, the "Oh Sh** Handle", they make those for a reason. They are great to hold onto when you feel the major need to have a baby in the car.
So we are driving 90 down the streets in Payson. We reached the freeway and then sped up to 100, which still was not fast enough for me. I was yelling at Dee to call 911. He was swearing at me because he didn't know what to do. It's amazing what goes through your mind at a time like that, but all I could think about was that our car was brand new, and I could not have a baby in it!
I finally convinced Dee to call 911, at this point I was yelling at him to pull the car over. The 911 operator was telling him to pull over, but he just kept driving. Thankfully the operator finally convinced him to pull the car over. She was giving him instructions, so he came over and told me to take my pants off, then he said "yep she's crowning". So Dee got ready to deliver him. Holding his cell phone by his ear, listening to the instructions of the operator; he put his hand on the baby's head to keep him from coming too fast.
Just then a Highway Patrol Trooper came flying up to us. I just remember thinking, wow she's a girl! She sent Dee to her car to get her maternity kit. As Dee got back she was just catching the baby, who literally just fell out. I said is it a boy-and yes it was a boy! They found the nose sucker in her kit and suctioned the baby. He never made a peep! He just sucked his thumb. She gave him to me to hold, at that point it seemed like an out of body experience for me. They could not find the umbilical cord clamp, so she just held the cord as hard as she could until the ambulance got there. We had to wrap him in a blanket from her trunk, it was made of wool and it was all scratchy. She later told me that she was so scared that something was wrong, because he never cried. But it turned out that he was just possibly the best baby ever, and he really truly never cried. After it was all over I remember the trooper saying, "oh by the way, my name is Kellie". She was so cute! All of this happened in just 15 minutes. When I looked at the clock it said 3:15!
My first trip in an ambulance was an interesting one at that. I realize that the EMTs are all volunteers, but come on people. I was completely in shock and they made me hold the baby all the way to the hospital. I don't know how I didn't drop him. Especially when the driver kept hitting the stupid construction orange barrels!
As I said earlier, we had argued about what Rylan's middle name would be. Dee really wanted to name him after his grandpa Ron, but I just didn't really like Rylan Ron. The next day, Kellie came to the hospital to see us, and I asked her what her last name was. She said Oaks. PERFECT! Rylan Oaks Nuttall...have you ever heard such a cute name in your life! Plus his initials spell R.O.N. How awesome is that!
Now I remember that when we called Brook & Melissa and Lewis & Florrie later that morning they all just laid in bed and laughed at our predicament. Come on guys, that's not nice!
That night has forever changed our lives. That special spirit that came into our home has been one of the greatest blessings ever. He was my angel baby. And now, he's just so cute that even when he's naughty, you just can't get mad at him. I love him with all my heart and I am so grateful to have him in our lives I cannot believe that my baby is 3 years old today.
I love you Ry---Happy Birthday!
